These baseball fans went in search of quality portable pitching mounds to field their tournaments and found Portolite

A baseball field with a portable pitching mound sits waiting for players to arrive.

Friends Brett Hossler and Eric Kastner have loved baseball since forever.

“We played as kids and into college, and enjoy the game so much,” Hossler said. “I now work as a director of business development, and Eric is in higher education. But we wanted to find a way to stay in baseball.”

The pair launched Midwest Tournament Factory in 2018 in their hometown of Tiffin, Ohio.

MW Tournament Factory now hosts the largest number of Nations Baseball events in the Buckeye State. They organize outdoor tournaments April through August, and indoor events from late autumn throughout winter. And they move outdoor games indoors if the Midwestern weather turns inclement.

With so much action, equipment is constantly moved from location to location and field to field.

The portable gear MW Tournament Factory used in the early days took a beating and soon wore out, Hossler said. Pitching mounds were big and bulky.

He and his partner went in search of safe, high-quality pitching mounds that could be used on an open outdoor field or a large indoor complex.

“That led us to Portolite,” Hossler said. “We needed portable pitching mounds that are durable and can be easily transported. One of the best things about these is we can set them up for a game, and when we are done, they fit easily into a SUV for transporting to the next tourney.”

He and Kastner own around 20 pitching game mounds in various sizes. MW Tournament Factory hosts baseball games for players 8U and up, as well as softball tourneys throughout northwest Ohio. That means field crews often scramble to shift game mounds from field to field for various levels of play throughout a weekend.

He hasn’t found a pitching mound on the market that is easier to move than Portolite, Hossler said.

Portability is important for the partners, but so is safety.

MW Tournament Factory prides itself on putting kids first and winning second. That means pitchers always throw from a pitching mound and not flat ground.

Other portable mounds would rock back and forth during play, Hossler said. Pitchers feared falling off the sides or that their feet would slip when they threw.

“You want your players to be concentrating on the game and not the mound,” he said.

Portolite game mounds are designed with a full body, high performance poly-protected core with fiberglass reinforcement to give pitchers a solid, cushioned baseball mound that reduces knee and ankle strain. They’re made with gentle slopes and tapered edges to give pitchers the highest level of comfort.

“We couldn’t be happier with these mounds,” Hossler said. “We have had no issues, and in two years, we have seen minimal wear. We would never go with anything else.”
